Course programme
A six day programme to provide newly appointed or potential managers the foundation for their formal development in the management role and to facilitate the transition from technical/engineering specialist to manager.
Course objectives
By the end of the programme participants will have the skills and ability to:
- Understand the role of a manager in today's organisations in order to manage strategically with an understanding of business objectives.
- Recognise the difference between leadership and management and use their knowledge to act in the role of manager and leader.
- Develop better interpersonal relationships at all levels.
- Communicate effectively and cascade information appropriately.
- Maximise the potential of their teams through coaching, feedback and performance management.
- Manage career development for themselves and their teams.
- Handle conflict and difficult situations with confidence and assertiveness.
- Have an understanding of Health and Safety legislation and the role of the manager in H&S.
- Promote business acumen and the basics of marketing and finance in order to fulfil their management role and broaden understanding of how organisations function.
- Lead projects using core tools and techniques.
- Undertake structured problem solving using core tools and strategies.
- Understand manufacturing excellence, the tools, the techniques and the philosophies.
Dates
- 3 x 2 day modules over a three month period.
- Start time: 9.00am each day.
- Finish time: 6.00pm each day.
The programme is accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management at Level 5, which is aimed at practising or potential middle managers and develops core middle management skills. Participants will gain an ILM Level 5 Award in Management which is a nationally recognised qualification which links to the QCF (Qualification and Credit Framework).
To achieve the ILM award participants will undertake three assignments: Understanding the Management Role, creating a Development Plan for a member of their team and a final project which will be linked to either lean manufacturing or to Corporate Social Responsibility, or a project identified by the business as giving value and fits the criteria for the ILM unit. Please note that you will need to identify a company based project supervisor/mentor for this course.
