Course programme

Modules

You will be taught separately from the traditional three-year undergraduate students and will study the following:

Year 1
  • Applied biological and pharmacological sciences for nursing
    This module introduces biological and pharmacological sciences and applies them to the chosen field of nursing.
  • Adult nursing and professional practice
    This module develops detailed knowledge and understanding of the professional, ethical and legal responsibilities in caring for patients in a variety of clinical settings. The importance of evaluating nursing practice using different models and frameworks utilised to deliver care will be explored, focusing on developing an appreciation of the professional codes, ethical values and legal frameworks which underpins health care practice.
  • Public health and well-being
    This module explores national and international health policies and examines the broader social, economic, environmental and political factors that impact health and well-being. It allows the student to investigate issues that have an impact on the health of individuals and communities, recognising the importance of supportive social, physical and cultural environments to promote health and well-being. The experience of mental health, physical illness and learning disabilities will be explored within the context of children's and adults lives and the impact these may have on physical and mental well-being.
Year 2
  • Caring for adults with long-term conditions
    This module explores and enhance knowledge and understanding of long term conditions including palliative care and end of life issues. It will enable you to explore the principles and process of rehabilitation within a variety of clinical settings. It should also enhance your knowledge of health promotion models and strategies in current use to improve patient care.
  • Adult acute and complex care
    This module supports development of critical thinking skills focusing on provision of evidence based nursing care for patients with both acute and complex conditions. You will understand the importance of early recognition and reporting of the deteriorating patient This will enable you to develop critical reasoning skills in caring for the acutely ill patients with complex needs, in a variety of health care settings.
  • Politics and leadership
    This module develops knowledge about the process of health care policy and realising leadership potential. Studying this module will help you to appreciate not only what is involved in leadership, but also how each individual nurse can make a contribution to the leadership within their area of practice.
  • Dissertation (optional)
    This module provides an opportunity to undertake an original enquiry in a chosen area of professional practice. Through the preparatory learning set you will be able to consolidate and extend your knowledge and understanding of research and evaluation design and associated methods of enquiry. You will be supported to develop the practical skills necessary to plan and carry out your chosen project. The preparatory learning set will address ethical and governance issues and processes relevant to your project.
