This course will be team-taught, bringing together tutors to cover this dynamic period in America's development from historical, literary, cultural perspectives. We start with the historical coverage to provide students with context for exploring the developments in literature, film, art and music that explode in this modernising of America.

About this course
- Understand how America changes socially, economically and politically during this period- Explore the literary works of the period and how it reflects the 'modernising' taking place in the country- Develop an awareness of how the film and motion picture industry has historically developed within America- Appreciate the context in which the music and art of the time develops and transforms American society.
Paper and pen for any notes you would like to take.Short stories and poems will be provided by the literature lecturer.
Through a mixture of lectures and class discussion, using a range of writings; visual evidence including maps, photographs, paintings; statistics and graphs; excerpts of literature, poems; and film clips. Evidence will include primary sources as well as secondary sources (subsequent reflections).

- historical changes (economic, social and political) occurring during this period of modernisation in America
- literature of the period to include poetry and short stories; authors include Carl Sandburg, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zora Neal Hurston
- culture, to include the developments in film and then addition of sound and the move to 'talkies', the changes in music and dance during the 1920s (the 'Roaring Twenties') and of the art scene that developes and 'moves' between America and Europe.
