You may want to move on to a science-related career or further education or wish to build up a qualification by studying individual units.

What are the entry requirements?
Three GCSE passes at Grade E or equivalent in relevant subjects including Mathematics and a subject requiring ability in English. You should have Basic Skills at Level 1 for Maths and Communications. If you do not have formal entry requirements, you will be asked to take an assessment of your English and Maths skills.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 2

  • You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing - for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 2

  • You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.


What qualification will I receive?
A nationally recognised award, GCSE in Applied Science. It is equivalent to 2 GCSEs. These will be reported as A* to GG. The grades will be a summary of your results for each of the three units. You may also be able to enrol on GCSE English and Maths.

Where can it lead?
The options open to you depend on the results achieved and your own interests. If you wish to continue studying in a vocational context, you could progress to a science based BTEC National Course such as Applied Science, Advanced Subsidiary or Advanced GCE in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, or an Access course. Alternatively, there are many careers that build on from the GCSE in Applied Science, such as areas of medicine, engineering and computing. Some areas of employment have further learning opportunities within them, for example a modern Apprenticeship for Pharmacy.

What will I study?
There are 3 units :
* Unit 1 - Developing Scientific Skills;
* Unit 2 - Science for the Needs of Society;
* Unit 3 - Science in the Workplace.

How will I be taught?
You will learn about what engineers and scientists actually do in their jobs. You will learn by doing through a variety of activities such as practical work, taking part in discussions, carrying out research and making presentations.

How will I be assessed?
Up to two thirds of the course will be internally assessed through assignments. One third of the course will be externally assessed through an exam.

What support is available while I am on the course?
There are group tutorials covering areas such as study skills and career guidance. Individual tutorials provide support and guidance. Additional help is available for language and numeracy. There is substantial language support for students whose first language is not English. The College's extensive language resources are available to all students.
