The foundation course at Kingston University has a national and international reputation for producing high-quality students. The course consists of a diverse 'taster' programme, linking perceptual, conceptual and technical responses to art and design practice.

Students will work in a different subject area each day. The importance of research, ideas and drawing (in the broadest sense) will be emphasised throughout the programme. Students will explore how drawing helps define visual sensibilities and initiate a personal and expressive creative language, whilst also providing the means by which to understand and practically resolve design problems. Each student will be encouraged to produce a body of work that will provide a more tangible focus to their aspirations.

Course programme

Course structure

Typical daily programme:

Students will work on a one-day brief in a different subject area each day, (these consist of the different subject pathways offered on the foundation course). Within each day, students will experience all stages of a project, including initial ideas, development, testing and resolution. Depending on the subject, these stages will take on different processes and mediums, creating everything from storyboards and scale models, to life drawing and typography.

Day 1 – Graphic design

Students will discover the power of design as a communication tool, specifically focusing on typography. Type can be used to communicate information, but also can evoke, describe and express a feeling, action, object or an experience. By the end of the day, each student will have created their own visual writing.

Day 2 – Fashion

Students will create individual concept boards based on their personal interests, and then work this through with drawing and collage to dissect shapes and themes. By the end of the day they will have translated these onto manikins using pins and metres of fabric.

Day 3 – Three-dimensional design

Students will spend the day learning skills in model making, using a variety of materials, exploring scale and perspective to discover alternative views and uses of everyday objects.

Day 4 – Fine art

This day will focus on drawing. Students will carry out a series of experimental drawing exercises throughout the day, to challenge their notion of drawing as well as the way they look and record. They will experiment with a range of materials and start to discover their own visual interests.

Day 5 – Illustration and moving image

Students will spend the morning doing alternative life drawing, focusing on character and narrative. In the afternoon they will begin to develop new narratives and discover how they can translate these into quick, expressive animations.

Each day will end with a group crit lead by the tutor to discuss strengths and weaknesses and evaluate just how much you can achieve in a day!
