What is the BIIAB Scottish Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing?

BIIAB, the dedicated awarding body for the licensed retail sector, has developed the BIIAB Scottish ARAR to meet industry-wide training requirements to demonstrate commitment to responsible alcohol retailing in licensed premises.

The BIIAB Scottish ARAR has been divided into two parts. The Scottish ARAR applies to all staff involved in the sale of alcohol for consumption on the premises. The Scottish ARAR (off sales) applies specifically to staff working in premises operating under an off-sales licence.

What does the qualification cover?

  • The nature of alcohol
  • the common measurements of alcohol content and the effect that it has on the human body
  • The relevant elements of the Licensing (Scotland) Act 1976 as they relate to alcohol retailers and servers
  • Licensing law in relation to children in Scotland
  • The social responsibilities relating to the retail sale of alcohol
  • Appropriate strategies that can be adopted to prevent or eliminate alcohol-related crime and conflict and the importance of personal safety

How is the qualification delivered?

The BIIAB Scottish ARAR has been designed to be delivered in less than a day and includes a short multiple-choice examination. A comprehensive handbook, presented in an easy-to-follow format, supports the qualification and covers all the information required to complete the examination.

The examinations consists of 25 multiple-choice questions, two of which are compulsory. To pass the examinations candidates must answer the two compulsory questions in section one correctly and 15 out of 23 in section two correctly.

The training and examination for this qualification is available in two ways:

  • candidates can attend a training course followed by a paper-based examination; or
  • candidates can receive training on-site, and take the examination using the telephone in a closely monitored environment.

The BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing is one of a number of BIIAB qualifications specifically designed for licensed retail employees that contribute towards other qualifications such as:

The Professional Barperson's Qualification

To achieve this qualification candidates must pass the BIIAB Scottish Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing plus the BIIAB Certificate in Customer and Drinks Service.
