This course is for bridge players who have learnt to open and bid suit and no trump contracts and are ready to progress to the competitive auction. We focus on learning how to overcall with strong and weak hands.

About this course

• Describe what is needed for a simple and jump overcall in a suit
• Know how to respond when partner makes a suit overcall
• Make takeout doubles up to and including two spades
• Explain what is needed for a 1NT overcall and know how to respond both in defence and as the declaring side.

You do not need to purchase anything but you are advised to bring note-taking materials.

Course programme

We will cover simple suit overcalls and jump overcalls and overcalling in no trumps and responses thereto. We will also learn when to use a takeout double. If time permits we will also cover Stayman.

The course will be taught in a relaxed and friendly environment and from day one you will be encouraged to play cards. Through discussion and observation, individual needs will be assessed and the course tailored to meet those needs. Teaching methods include prepared hands to play; Q & A; quizzes and recapitulation. All handouts will be provided including worksheets for optional homework practice.
