About this course

Applicants should have 2 GCSEs at Grade D. Learners gaining or possessing a level one or the Introductory Diploma in Travel and Tourism would also be considered. Exceptions to entry requirements may be made for mature applicants.

What are the Course Details?
The BTEC First Diploma in Travel and Tourism is a one year full time course designed to prepare learners for careers in the travel and tourism industry including airports, travel agents as well as careers working abroad, or continuing in further education.


Is the Course for Me?
The qualification is nationally recognised and has been designed to keep pace with developments in the Travel and Tourism industry. The course is equivalent to four GCSEs (A*-C). The course is delivered by staff who have both educational and professional qualifications. Staff also have a range of professional experience, which has been gained from employment in the industry, enabling them to relate theory to practice.

What will I Learn?
The one year course incorporates 6 units encompassing:
1. The UK Travel and Tourism industry
2. Exploring customer service
3. UK Travel and Tourism destinations
4. Exploring marketing
5. Developing employability skills for Travel and Tourism
6. Planning visits for Travel and Tourism
Learners will also undertake practical sessions using our airline simulation and working travel office during the course as well as participating in a range of events.

How will I Learn?
You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities.

How will I be Assessed?
Assessment on the course is continuous and involves the completion of assignments, group presentations and practical activities. The work is externally moderated by the awarding body, Edexcel. The overall grade for the course can be a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
You will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills in English, Maths and IT.

What Enrichments are Available?
A wide range of enrichment activities and additional studies are available to complement the course including Basic Spanish as well as non-vocational activities unrelated to the vocational area.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
There will be opportunities for you to undertake visits to relevant outlets as part of organised trips. There is also the possibility of learners taking part in an overseas residential visit, which normally includes tourism related visits as part of the organised trip.

Is there any Work Experience?
As part of the course you will be required to undertake a work placement for a period of two weeks. Normally taking place in November.

What can I Progress to?
Learners can progress on to the National Award in Travel, Tourism Airline and Cruise or other appropriate level three programmes at the college (depending on overall grades).
Alternatively learners may wish to seek employment in the travel and tourism industry.

Other Learner's Experiences:
Many learners have progressed onto the National Award in Travel & Tourism. Some learners have looked at other courses within the College and others have found employment.

Acceptance onto courses may be subject to a satisfactory interview and references. For some courses learners may also be required to pay for a CRB disclosure
