This course is offered as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. You will take 3 Higher Level subjects and 3 Standard Level subjects and complete components in Theory of Knowledge, Creativity Action Service and an Extended Essay.

Course overview

IB Higher and Standard Level Business and Management introduces you to strategic business decision-making and the core business functions of marketing, production, human resource management, and finance.

You will study the following topics:

Business Organisation and Environment

Human Resources

Accounts and Finance

Marketing

Operations Management

Business Strategy (HL only)

You will always be encouraged to understand the social and ethical implications of business activity in a global market and to adopt an international perspective of business through the use of a diverse range of case study and stimulus material.

How you will learn

You will learn through a variety of methods to support your understanding and learning style. These include, class discussion, individual work and study, exam-focused teaching, external workshops, presentations, independent research, and a scheduled programme of assessment and revision to accelerate your learning.

How you will be assessed

External Assessment:

Paper 1: (On all six topics 40% HL; 35% SL)

Based on a case study issued in advance.

Section A you answer TWO of three structured questions. Section B you answer ONE compulsory structured question including evaluative skills.

Section C you answer ONE compulsory question focusing on strategic decision-making through the use of extension material (HL only).

Paper 2: (On all six topics 35% HL; 40% SL)

Section A you answer ONE of the two structured questions based on stimulus material with a quantitative element. Section B you answer TWO of the three structured questions based on stimulus material.

I nternal Assessment:

(25% Higher Level)

A research project that includes a research proposal and action plan; the actual report addresses an issue facing an organisation or analyses a decision to be made by an organisation. Maximum 2000 words.

(25% Standard Level)

A written commentary based on three to five supporting documents about a real issue or problem facing a particular organisation. Maximum 1500 words.
