You will practise getting your message across in both speaking and writing, adopting the right level of formality, taking your audience into consideration, writing emails for different purposes, being persuasive, using the right language for cold-calling and identifying appropriate conventions in report writing. At the same, you will develop your business vocabulary such as common business collocations, advanced linking words, business phrasal verbs and vocabulary around specific concepts e.g. cause and effect. Finally, there will also be an emphasis on pronunciation as a way in which meaning is communicated.

Additional information

There are many courses you could do next or at the same time – for instance English for Business or our Communicating at Work series. Our Advanced Writing in Practice course would be an excellent course as would Grammer in Practice: Advanced. One of the Cambridge English courses might also be suitable (CAE or CPE). Our ESOL Pronunciation Stage 1 would also be helpful. Your tutor will advise you on the best course. General information and advice on courses at City Lit is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00. See the course guide for term dates and further details
