This is a one-year full-time programme for individuals who have a minimum level of literacy and have an interest in working with young children. Students will study personal development (including work experience assessment), food and nutrition, health and safety practices in the home and group settings, play activities, human growth and development, care of children, and orientation to work.

Less than 3 GCSE's C and up to E grade or merit passes gained in CACHE Entry Level Childcare.
Mature applicants - no formal qualification necessary.

Course programme

Course Content
Unit 1 - Personal Development
This unit will help you to understand your role as a responsible member of the community and prepare you for work.
Unit 2 - Human Growth and Development From Birth To Old Age
In this unit you will gain an understanding of how a person develops from a baby to an elderly person. You will find out how children learn to think and communicate, how they develop physically and the emotional and social needs of a person.
The key lessons of this unit are that everyone follows a similar pattern of development but everyone develops at a different rate.
Unit 3 - Food And Nutrition
This unit will give you knowledge and understanding of the importance of "Healthy and Balanced Diets" and how it can affect a childs development.
Unit 4 - Health and Safety Practices in Home And Group Setting
In this unit you will learn the importance of safety and basic ways we can keep children and others safe from accidents and illnesses.
Unit 5 - Care Of Children
This unit will help you understand the basic care needs of young children. You will learn how to care for young children of different ages by studying the daily routine for children.
Unit 6 - Play And Practical Activities
This is a double unit which will introduce play as an important part of a child's learning and development. You will learn about planning activities, toys and other equipment needed to support children's learning and development and the role of adults in supporting and encouraging children's play.
Unit 7 - Orientation To Work Programme
This unit will begin to prepare you for working with children and introduce you to the childcare profession. It will help you to work under supervision and in a team with children 0-15 years.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment consists of:
·A satisfactory tutor report for unit 1
·A portfolio of tasks for units 2 to 6
·A satisfactory Personal Action Plan for Unit 7
·A short answer test paper which assesses units 2,3,4,5,6 and 7.
What can I do next?
The progression onto the CACHE Level 2 Diploma in Childcare and Education can be gained by achieving a Merit pass in both coursework and exam and Level 1 communications in the Foundation Award programme.
