This course is for students who have been playing for at least 4 years and who are playing at Grade 5 standard and above. You will develop your technique, learn works from the solo repertoire, and play music for cello ensemble. There will be opportunities for formal and informal performance.

About this course

- Acquire solid proficiency in all neck positions and thumb position
- Explore above thumb position
- Sight read more fluently
- Play with improved tone production and vibrato
- Play ensemble music in 2 to 8 parts (covering various periods and styles)
- Move comfortably between bass, tenor and treble clefs
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of some solo repertoire
- Improve performance technique and confidence.

Please bring your cello, a pencil, and a folder to keep your music organised.
The tutor will provide some musical material, but you may also need to borrow or purchase music. A great deal of suitable repertoire is available online from Petrucci Music Library.

You will learn through tutor explanation and demonstration, playing in the group and individually, and class discussion. Music provided by the tutor will cater for the range of levels of experience in this class. You are expected to practise regularly between sessions (at least 30 minutes 5 times per week).

Course programme

- Technical work: scales and arpeggios up to four flats/sharps, chromatic scales (up to 3 octaves), studies
- Vibrato, playing in higher positions, shifting, and chords
- Bowing techniques for control of tone and articulation, string crossing
- Reading and playing in all three clefs
- Works from the solo cello repertoire
- Practice discipline, including playing with a metronome
- Awareness of musical structure and style
- Ensemble playing (3-8 parts)
- Developing confidence in performing.

Additional information

You may stay in this course for as long as you wish. There is scope for progression within this class to a high level of playing.
