This 10 week course aims to demonstrate the diverse ways in which throwing is used and will give each learner the information and instruction to understand the mechanics of throwing and finishing pots. Learning outcomes (including what the student will be able to do by the end of the course): Exposed to the techniques required to throw bowls, plates, cylindrical pots and vases; forming lids. Suitable for: All levels of experience welcome. This pottery wheel throwing course is ideal for both the beginner and advanced student who, with tutor guidance, wish to develop and/or improve upon their throwing technique whilst giving equal attention to form, function and decoration.

Ceramics Tour of Techniques


Who is this course for?
All levels of experience welcome. This pottery wheel throwing course is ideal for both the beginner and advanced student who, with tutor guidance, wish to develop and/or improve upon their throwing technique whilst giving equal attention to form, function and decoration.

What previous knowledge/experience are required?
A keen interest in working with clay and the enthusiasm and patience to allow for their wheel throwing skills to be developed.

What is the level of the course?
This course is structured to introduce beginners to the techniques and step-by-step processes of hand throwing and an opportunity for more advanced learners to progress from basic forms and concentrate on more complex multi-part thrown and constructed forms.

What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?
This 10 week course aims to demonstrate the diverse ways in which throwing is used and will give each learner the information and instruction to understand the mechanics of throwing and finishing pots. Learning outcomes (including what the student will be able to do by the end of the course) : - Exposed to the techniques required to throw bowls, plates, cylindrical pots and vases; forming lids, spouts and handles to embellish basic shapes. - Progress to more complex multi-part thrown and constructed forms.

What teaching and learning methods will be used on the course?
The programme is taught through tutor demonstration and caters for individual interests and potentials. Through one to one sessions, group discussions and sharing skills and knowledge within the group.

How will we assess your progress on the course?
Ongoing tutorial feedback through ILP's.

What type of qualification will passing this course give me?
No formal qualification. The objective of this course is to introduce, explore and develop a range of throwing skills.

What extra study/practice do we expect you to do outside the class?
Learners will be encouraged to visit current exhibitions and events as inspiration for their ideas and work

What can I do after completing this course?
You can continue to develop further skills;you can take other ceramics classes which focus on different aspects of ceramics; you can go on to take OCN ceramics and from here you may wish to do an access course.

Are there any other costs? (e.g. materials, equipment or books I need to buy before or during the course)
Basic tools will be offered, but you may wish to buy additional tools for your personal use. List of tools will be provided, there is a charge of £16 per student per term and a £1,50 per pound for clay before firing. This covers cost of clay, glazing and firing.
