Course content:
South Tyneside College offers courses for seafaring marine engineers at Second Engineer (III/3) Level to cover the following examinable subject areas:
Academic Subjects: Engineering Science I
- Mathematics
- Mechanics
- Naval Architecture
Academic Subjects: Engineering Science II
- Applied Heat and Electrotechnology
Professional Subjects: Engineering Knowledge I
- Ships auxiliary systems, their operation and safety
Professional Subjects: Engineering Knowledge II
- The main diesel engine, operation and safety aspects.
A programmed course is arranged to cover the above subjects.
Course structure:
Subject combinations from the course content are possible during a term of 11 weeks duration. Combinations will depend upon timetabling feasibility.
If you require Engineering Knowledge I and II only, you may be able to cover the relevant subject areas and complete the course in approximately 6 weeks.
If your work schedule does not allow you to study for a 6 week or 11 week programme, you can attend the College during periods when you are on leave.
It may be possible to gain the knowledge required for the examinations by attending part programmes throughout the academic year. It must be noted, however, that such an approach may have timetabling difficulties and partial repetition of sections of the course may be unavoidable.
It also requires total commitment and dedication. A plan of attendance will need to be devised for each candidate.
Please contact us for details.
Assessment procedure:
The current method of assessment is by external examination prepared by SQA on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.
Single subject certificates are issued for passes in the academic subjects and for a combination of professional subject passes.
Upon passing the required assessment and an MCA Oral Examination
* the candidate will be awarded the Certificate of Competency.
Written examination papers are of two hours duration.
Please note: All Candidates must be in possession of an MCA Notice of Eligibility to apply for an oral examination.
