This Children and Young People's Nursing course runs in 2016/17.

The role of the children and young people's nurse in contemporary society is constantly developing. This course aims to provide you with the specific knowledge and skills to enable you to become a caring and compassionate practitioner well prepared to meet the needs of children, young people and their families.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Successful completion of this course offers the potential for a nursing career with children and young people in this professional field of practice.

On successful completion of this course you will be eligible to apply for registration with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The course focuses on integrated care for children and young people in a variety of settings. You will learn to value the needs of children and their families through their ongoing involvement in the curriculum.

You will acquire a wide range of children’s nursing skills and in depth knowledge of developmental anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology.

You will develop skills in communication, health assessment, professional practice, evidence based practice, knowledge of public health and policy and legal and ethical issues.

This course will ensure that the qualities of care, compassion, courage, competence, commitment and communication underpin all your professional practice as a Children and Young People’s Nurse.

To reflect the changes in the health professions, this course could be subject to change as developments are notified to the University.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

This course uses a wide variety of stimulating approaches to teaching and learning including lectures, skills lab activities, online learning and practical placements.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: examinations 6%, coursework 57%, other e.g. placements etc 37%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

50% of the course is practice based requiring 40 hours per week in placements. In a typical university based week it is expected that you will spend a maximum 21 hours teaching contact hours of study which may break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 5-10 hours of supervised learning

Medium group teaching: 3-5 hours of group practical sessions

Large group teaching: 4 hours of led lectures and 2 hours of online learning discussions

Personal study: 7–12 hours each week is set aside for personal learning whilst in university
