The course will follow the text book 'Chinese in Steps Vol 1' by George X Zhang, Linda M Li and Li K Suen. This course feeds into Beginners Level 2 [Summer Term 2010] and then.

Chinese Absolute Beginners level 1
Your Course
This course is for complete beginners and further courses will be provided in blocks of 10 weeks. This first 10 week course concentrates on pronunciation, listening and speaking with limited Chinese character recognition. The course will follow the text book 'Chinese in Steps Vol 1' by George X Zhang, Linda M Li and Li K Suen.
This course feeds into Beginners Level 2 [Summer Term 2010] and then Beginners 3 [Autumn Term 2010].
During this course students will take a short internal assessment in speaking or listening. This will help to prepare them for the OCR Asset languages test that will be taken at the end of the first year of study.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course you will have been given the opportunity to:
· Learn Chinese pronunciation and its representation in terms of the phonetic alphabet
· Greet people and introduce yourself and a third party
· Meet people and ask questions with regard to their nationality and native language
· Tell the time, obtain information related to time and make appointments.
· Say the days of the week, dates and the months of the year
· Learn numbers.
· Learn Chinese strokes, scripts and simple Chinese calligraphy
· Learn about Chinese sentence structure
Your Tutor
Ying Liang is a native Mandarin Chinese speaker. She has been teaching Mandarin Chinese to post 16 international students with different academic backgrounds at Hills Road Sixth Form College since 2006 and is an accredited teacher in Asset Languages. She has an award for PTTLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) from Hills Road Sixth Form College.

Tuition fees: £95
Method of payment: Fees for short courses (10 weeks or less) to be paid in full at enrolment and for long courses (12 weeks or more) fees of 50% can be paid at enrolment plus 50% as a cheque. Course places cannot be reserved without receipt of both payments.

Please note that there are no classes during half term Monday 15th - Friday 19th February 2010 unless otherwise stated.
