This Civil Engineering course runs in 2016/17.

Civil engineers change the world – literally. As a successful graduate of this course, you will help provide essential infrastructure for society and take a leading role in maintaining the quality of our environment.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Throughout the Civil Engineering course you will study subjects that can give you the necessary skills to analyse, design and manage solutions for innovative and complex engineering problems as a basis for future leadership in the civil engineering profession.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • a course accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM)* as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng), and of an Incorporated Engineer (IEng);
  • significant opportunities to apply for industrial placements at companies that have previously included: Balfour Beatty Construction, Mott Macdonald, Severn Trent Water, Interserve Project Services, Warwickshire County Council, Atkins and Morgan Sindall;
  • a committed group of experienced academics who are active in research and have recent industrial experience, bringing their practical experience into the course to ensure it is current and relevant to the needs of industry;
  • studying alongside part-time students who are working in the industry, giving you first-hand experience of construction and providing a rich learning experience that reflects the complexities of the construction industry;
  • use of the unique Coventry University Construction Simulation Centre;
  • a course that achieved an overall satisfaction of 95% in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2015.

Accreditations

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery. See the Joint Board of Moderators website for further information.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

There are three core course themes which are carefully balanced across all years of the course: specific technical knowledge, construction practice and skill development through group project work.

Throughout the four years of study you will cover the principles of civil engineering including: engineering analysis, structural analysis and design, highways and surveying, construction and project management, water and ground engineering.

In year four you will study subjects such as: bridge engineering, construction contracts, structural dynamics, project and system management and advanced structural analysis and design.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated tutorials, labs and practical sessions. In addition, you will be assigned a personal tutor who will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

If you are interested in part-time study (which is taught during the day) please contact the Part-time Admissions team on +44 (0) 24 7765 4321 or email part-time.uni@coventry.ac.uk for further information, but please note that not all courses have a part-time option.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 40%; coursework, tests, essays 10%; practical or project work 20%; group work etc.20%; presentations, posters etc. 10%.

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed at each stage: please see the page on the Add+vantage scheme for more details.
