Qualification Structure

The ACP qualification framework offers three professional levels:

  • Certificate in Information Technology and Programming.
  • Diploma in Information Systems Analysis and Design.
  • Advanced Diploma in Computer Science.

Certificate in Information Technology & Programming

Unless a student has prior computing qualifications and/or experience, they will enter at the level of the 'Certificate in Information Technology & Programming'. At this level, emphasis is placed on the introduction, installation, operation and application of computers. Practical applications include databases, desk-top publishing, graphics, multimedia, networking, electronic communication, spreadsheets and web pages. Students will attend a course of at least 300 hours' duration, devoting a further 60 hours to project work.

Diploma in Information Systems Analysis & Design

Successful examination candidates from the Certificate course may progress to the 'Diploma in Information Systems Analysis & Design'. During a further 6 month course, of no less than 300 hours' duration, students will develop their basic skills into the area of Systems Analysis & Design, Software Engineering and Business Information Systems. The course has a marked practical emphasis to ensure that candidates reach a level of programming competence sufficient to commence employment. During the course, candidates are also required to submit 6 Practical Diploma Assignments (2 for each subject at this level), typically requiring between around 16 hours for each assignment and using languages such as Java, Pascal or 'C'.

Advanced Diploma in Computer Science

This course is open to successful graduates of the ACP Certificate and Diploma, or those who have been offered exemption from the lower levels on the basis of alternative qualifications and/or experience. The Advanced Diploma course lasts a further academic year (i.e. a minimum of 600 hours full time study, extending over 40 weeks). Skills learned at first year level are developed to a standard appropriate for more senior positions within the IT industry. Students are required to submit 2 projects - a Programming Project in Java (the preferred choice, for reasons highlighted in ACP's syllabuses), Pascal or 'C' as well as an Individual Project in an approved subject. Each project can be expected to demand 60-80 hours' work by the candidate and will contribute to their overall examination result.•

The above levels are normally taught on full-time courses (comprising each of week 15 hours classroom tuition plus a minimum of 3 hours hands-on practical work). The Certificate and Diploma courses require a full academic year, typically 40 teaching weeks; the Advanced Diploma course is normally taught over a second academic year. Each professional level has three written examinations and a practical component, all of which are compulsory. Each examination lasts two and a half hours and is conducted on a closed-book basis (candidates may not refer to notes or other reference material). Examination sessions for every subject are arranged three times each year as promulgated in ACP¢s examination calendar. This syllabus should be read in conjunction with the ACP¢s brochure on Student Information and with ACP Centre Notes.

PRACTICAL COMPONENTS

Centers will need to provide adequate practical facilities in line with current syllabus requirements; these include personal computers, a network (for the Advanced Diploma), modern system software, approved programming languages, and up-to-date applications packages (for word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, and database assignments). At the Certificate and Advanced Diploma levels, full project documentation is expected; this can take the form of a bound A4 size folder or CD-ROM format. At Diploma level, two assignments for each subject are needed, each of some 1-2 days¢ work. Any candidate¢s practical work may be requested by ACP for moderation. At the Advanced Diploma level, all project work must be externally moderated. Projects must be submitted on CD-ROM, and they should be supplied in a standard format.

AFTER ACP

Since the early 1980s, ACP courses have been taught at training centres in over 60 countries worldwide. For some twenty years, our students have progressed from the ACP Advanced Diploma to undergraduate and postgraduate courses at British universities. Over the past decade, a number of ACP colleges have received university approval to run Bachelor of Science (BSc) computing courses internally at their training centre. This stands testimony to the recognition of ACP's qualifications within the UK education system.

On these degree programmes, a student will complete the ACP Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma within two academic years. With appropriate grades in the ACP Advanced Diploma examinations, the student becomes eligible to enroll on the BSc Computing course. This is a twelve month period of study, combined with project work, covering the final year of the degree, at the end of which the successful student is awarded the BSc degree by the university. Of course, the true test of the ACP, as a degree foundation course, is the ultimate successes of our students at the end of their final degree year and the great majorities do graduate with honours. An increasing number go on to complete postgraduate studies and attain their MSc degree; others find rewarding employment in reputable commercial and financial institutions and teaching establishments.

The content of ACP's professional syllabuses has, naturally, been influenced by the requirements of universities and employers. The broadly based topics encountered on the BSc have been reflected in ACP's syllabus with increasing emphasis placed upon relational databases, networking, internet applications, e-commerce, object-oriented programming and project management. The development of a student's practical skills, during his/her ACP courses ensures that they are appropriately equipped to enter the workplace.
