• Explain your communication needs to other people
• Use communication strategies to cope in difficult listening situations
• Request clarification when you have not understood
• Be aware of the importance of lipreading
• Be aware of assistive listening devices.
There are no materials or extra costs. You may find it helpful to bring a pen and notebook and an A4 folder for any handouts.

Course programme
The course covers coping with conversations in difficult listening situations. Topics will be geared towards the group’s suggested needs, and are likely to include conversation in background noise, conversation at restaurants and at the dinner table, watching TV, using the telephone, communicating with people you find hard to understand.
Sessions are structured so that the class members can discuss and focus on their particular communication issues and needs. The aim is for participants to look at the problems and come up with solutions to try out, under the guidance of the tutor. In class there will be group work, pair work and tutor explanation.Additional information
