This course is for anyone with an interest in the environment, either as valuable preparation for work in the sector or as a vehicle for further education, including our new Foundation Degree in Environmental Conservation.

What does the course involve?
The equivalent to one A Level, this course could provide a practical element to complement other classroom-based subjects. You will study a wide range of countryside and environmental topics in an exciting, stimulating and active environment.

The course includes a high proportion of fieldwork and will give you fantastic opportunities to carry out actual conservation and habitat management work. We are able to make the most of our wonderful location and excellent local contacts to ensure we cover the broadest possible range of knowledge, skills and experience.

If you are someone who enjoys practical work, gaining a real sense of achievement and are passionate about maintaining our amazing locality, this course is an excellent and purposeful choice.

What will I study?
Subject areas include:
Estate Skills Learn practical estate skills in real-life settings, such as improving, footpaths, fencing and building structures.

Countryside Tourism Tourism is an important and growing source of income for rural communities. Find out how it has evolved and look at the challenges that exist when it is necessary to balance the need to encourage tourism while considering the environment.

Farmland Habitat Management The effects of modern farming techniques have had a devastating impact on UK ecology. This unit explains how modern farmers are working with conservationists to redress the balance as well as allowing students to participate in an assessment of local farming land, carrying out practical improvements to enhance the habitats of different fauna and flora.

Greenland Woodcrafts The opportunity to learn willow weaving, coppicing and other woodcraft activities.

Archaeology and Landscapes Find out how our ancestors shaped the land around us.

Woodland Habitat Management This unit will allow you to become involved in habitat management within our beautiful local woodland, many of which sustain unique features.

What are the entry requirements for Countryside Management - Level 3 National Award?
You should only apply for this course if you meet, or expect to meet, the following requirements:-

• The usual College entry requirements apply.
• You do not need to have studied this subject before.

Will I have to study all week?
The course will be taught over several days in the week, with those on placements also working during the college week.

Will I have a work placement?
Some units will involve work placements.

Will I get paid for work placement?
Probably not; some employers do so.

What sort of equipment will I need to buy?
You will need to provide your own outdoor clothing (including steel toe-capped boots). Hiking clothes, army surplus or equivalent are ideal, and a kit bag is extremely useful.
