Course programme

Course review:

The Drumming Skills Course gives the drum student a one-to-one personalised course of drumming tuition.

It is a flexible personalised course of drumming lessons at professional drum studios in London and other locations in the South of England.

Beginners can expect to make rapid progress in the first few weeks with learning the essential coordination and technical skills required to become a drummer. More advanced students can expect to improve upon their existing knowledge and iron out any bad habits they may have developed in the past.

The course will then cover a broad range of topics giving the student a thorough understanding of contemporary drumming, with the empahsis on practical musical application and performance.

Students can choose whether or not the want to work towards formal drumming qualifications (it is not obligatory for those that wish to learn drums without doing exams).

Topics covered include:

  • Playing grooves and fills in all musical genres
  • Stylistic interpretation
  • Aural perception
  • Performance techniques
  • Composition and improvisation
  • Thought processes and internalisation
  • Drumming within the context of a band
  • Coordination, independence and inter-dependence
  • Time feel (internal clock) development
  • Drum kit maintenance
  • Dynamics and expression
  • Music production for drummers
  • Reading and writing drum music (music theory)

The 10-week short course is ideal for beginners with no previous drumming experience or for more advanced players who wish to develop their skills. There are no age limits and enrollment is continuous throughout the year. Each student receives one hour per week of personalised one-to-one drumming tuition. Courses are tailored to suit the needs of each individual student to ensure they get the most from their drum lessons.

Drumming courses are also available as a 'mini' course of 5 weeks, or as one-off individual lessons.
