This course is offered as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. You will take 3 Higher Level subjects and 3 Standard Level subjects and complete components in Theory of Knowledge, Creativity Action Service and an Extended Essay.
Course overview
IB Higher Level English offers you the study of Literature designed to introduce the rich variety of human experience across a range of texts carefully selected for their historical, cultural and artistic merit. You will study a total of 14 texts over two years. The texts you will study are drawn from prose fiction, essays, poetry and drama. In accordance with the IB philosophy and approach, the course texts include World Literature (and thus written in translation) as well as those written in English. The fact of the International dimension to IB English will equip you with appreciable insight, awareness, sensitivity and understanding into the Literature of other cultures and traditions in addition to the rich heritage of English Literature.
How you will learn
Classes will encourage the active participation in discussion whether in small groups or in whole class plenary. A broad range of activities will be set to assist you in becoming an engaged, independent learner who is able to appreciate the diversity of literary texts in their moral and artistic complexity; and within this develop intellectual sensitivities and apply critical judgement through structured responses to texts and their meanings. Classroom study will be augmented by film screenings in the college cinema and theatre visits. In addition, you will have the opportunity to participate in the annual departmental visits to the cultural heritage centre of Florence and the historical centres of Ypres and The Somme.

Commentary on unseen passage of poetry or prose
1 x Essay based on Group III works
World Literature 20%
2 x Comparative Essays from World Literature
Internal Assessment:
Oral Assessment 30%
