English Language GCE A Level

Qualification: AS/A2 - 2 year course

Course type: Level 3 (advanced)

Entry requirements:
4 x GCSE B grades, including B or above in English Language.

B or above at GCSE in a foreign language is desirable, but not essential.

An aptitude for maths and sciences will be useful, but there are no specific requirements.

Head of Department: Mr Robert Jones

Course assessment:
AS:
  • 1 exam: you will analyse two texts, and write about children's language acquisition.
  • 1 coursework folder: you will investigate how a person, group or idea is represented across a range of texts, and create your own representation (eg: newspaper article, monologue) of your chosen topic.

A2:
  • 1 exam: you will discuss varieties of English used in Britain and the World, and how language changes. You will also analyse views on debates in these two fields.
  • 1 coursework folder: you will investigate an aspect of spoken language, and write your own 'intervention' in a language debate.

Throughout the course you will be assessed by formal essays, individual and group presentations, project work, and shorter assignments and objective tests.

What can this course offer me?
Our language carves our world: exploring English Language helps us understand why we see the world the way we do, how others have seen it in the past, and the choices we can make about its future. KGV English Department has an excellent record of achievement in this challenging and highly rewarding subject and has amongst its experienced staff holders of both Masters and PhD degrees in Language and Linguistics.

What will I learn?
At AS you will: master the grammar needed to describe language effectively; discuss language use in a number of modes (written, spoken, electronic) by a range of users in diverse situations; find out how children learn English in their earliest years; produce a coursework folder in which you investigate how a topic of your choice is represented in language, and creatively represent a person, group, idea or event in a way you see fit.

At A2 you will: expand your study of English to cover regional, social and world varieties; explore the development of English, how and why it has changed, and its future prospects; discuss attitudes to different varieties of English (such as accents) and the ways English is changing (such as the influence of other cultures and languages); produce a coursework folder which investigates an aspect of spoken English and creatively joins in with a key language debate.

What Makes a good English Language student?
You will:
  • notice the language around you
  • be an avid reader and enjoy the power of words
  • be keen to improve your use of English
  • be prepared to defend a viewpoint and listen to those of others
  • have an urge to label, categorise and interpret data.

Which other courses link well with this subject?
English Language students tend to study other arts, humanities and media courses, and some also study English Literature. It is also a helpful fourth subject in a science or social science programme, improving your communication skills and broadening your range.

Future Opportunities
Anywhere and everywhere. You will come out of this course a more knowledgeable, analytical, reflective and critically astute person, more in touch with your culture and humanity than before you started - with valuable transferable skills in terms of employment and life. You will also be able to apply for Higher Education courses in English Language and Linguistics, and will have enhanced your application for a range of other subjects as diverse as English Literature, Law, Medicine, Psychology, Politics and Speech Therapy.

Is there anything else I need to know?
English Language is a living subject, and English Language students enjoy lively lessons! We do not slavishly follow a text book: your own experience of your own language is the best data you have. But there is lot to learn - new methods of analysis, a whole new terminology, some challenging ideas and lots of facts. A Level English Language does develop aspects of GCSE English, but is better thought of as a new and very different subject.
