Course programme
English Language & Literature
Exam Board: AQA
Additional Information: An ability to write in varied forms, a willingness to read a range of literary and non-literary text as well as a fascination with language.
N.B: English Language and Literature cannot be studied alongside another AS English course and is not the recommended choice for students wishing to pursue English Literature to degree level.
COURSE OUTLINE
AS
You will study a combination of prose and drama texts and you will explore these texts to consider both analytical study and to inform the production of your own creative work. You will respond to different types of spoken text, exploring the connections between them. A stimulating opportunity, therefore, to extend your studies in English in a balanced way that will refine your interpretative reading capabilities, develop your confidence at self-expression and provide opportunities for you to practise and refine your own original writing skills. You will be expected to read enthusiastically, share ideas, contribute to group work or discussion and be willing to explore your own imagination.
A2
The A2 course extends your study to include an examination of poetry texts to consider uses of poetic language alongside the study of either drama or prose. You will also examine in close detail, unseen non-literary texts, considering links and contrasts between them. The course will sharpen your critical response to literary and nonliterary passages you are encountering for the first time and your study of a prose text will allow you to reflect on insights gained from integrated literary and linguistic study across the whole course. It prepares you for further study of English in higher education and offers a widely respected A-level qualification for employment.
