WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
The European Computer Driving License (ECDL) Advanced is an international qualification, administered in the UK by the British Computer Society. Candidates who gain this qualification will have demonstrated that they have acquired high level skills in a number of specific computer applications that are highly relevant in the workplace.

The five modules that are studied in this course are as follows:

Word Processing
Spreadsheets
Databases
Presentations
Improving Productivity Using IT (This is the mandatory unit)

To gain the qualification, candidates have to sit an externally assessed exam in each of the five modules.

WHAT DO I NEED?
WHAT WILL I ACHIEVE?
When you pass the exam associated with a particular module, you will be issued with an ECDL Advanced Certificate in that module from the British Computer Society. Also, if you pass all five modules, then you will gain a full level 3 ITQ Certificate.

COURSE SUMMARY
A brief overview of the ECDL Advanced modules:

Advanced Word Processing

Apply advanced text, paragraph, column and table formatting. Convert text to a table and vice versa.
Work with referencing features like footnotes, endnotes and captions. Create tables of contents, indexes and cross-references.
Enhance productivity by using fields, forms and templates.
Apply advanced mail merge techniques and work with automation features like macros.
Use linking and embedding features to integrate data.
Collaborate on and review documents. Work with master documents and subdocuments. Apply document security features.
Work with watermarks, sections, headers and footers in a document.

Advanced Spreadsheets

Apply advanced formatting options such as conditional formatting and customised number formatting and handle worksheets.
Use functions such as those associated with logical, statistical, financial and mathematical operations.
Create charts and apply advanced chart formatting features.
Work with tables and lists to analyse, filter and sort data. Create and use scenarios.
Validate and audit spreadsheet data.
Enhance productivity by working with named cell ranges, macros and templates.
Use linking, embedding and importing features to integrate data.
Collaborate on and review spreadsheets. Apply spreadsheet security features.

Advanced Database

Understand key concepts of database development and usage.
Create a relational database using advanced table creation features and complex relationships between tables.
Design and use queries to create a table, update, delete and amend data. Refine queries using wildcards, parameters and calculations.
Use controls and sub forms to enhance and improve functionality.
Create report controls to perform calculations. Create sub reports and enhance report presentations.
Enhance productivity by working with macros and use linking and importing features to integrate data.

Advanced Presentation

Understand target audience and venue considerations in presentation planning.
Create and modify templates and format slide backgrounds.
Enhance a presentation using built-in drawing and image tools.
Apply advanced chart formatting features and create and edit diagrams.
Insert movies and sound and apply built-in animation features.
Use linking, embedding, importing and exporting features to integrate data.
Work with custom slide shows, apply slide show settings, and control a slide show.

Improving productivity (The mandatory unit)

As this is a new unit, we are waiting for further information from the British Computer Society. However this unit assesses your ability to demonstrate that you can apply your skills and knowledge to develop a specified outcome and produce a solution. You must independently determine, select and apply the necessary IT tools and techniques to achieve your goal.

WHAT ARE MY COMMITMENTS?
In addition to attending one evening a week on a Tuesday for two years, you may have to spend some time at home working through various topics / exercises / practice tests to improve your chance of passing the exams.

Classes are held on Tuesday evenings from 6.00pm-9.30pm

WHAT WILL IT COST ME?
2i609-09 Course fees 0 16-18 year olds, 0(0) 19 years and over

Course fees are payable on enrolment. Costs shown in brackets are for those on income-based benefits. Refunds are not normally available.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
It may be possible to expand into other areas of IT, for example, IT Technicians, Building and Upgrading PCs or Web Page Design, courses which are run at this and other colleges.

Alternatively if you possess equivalent qualifications or if you think you have appropriate work based experience, then it is a requirement that you discuss this with the course tutors to ensure that the course is suitable for your needs, prior to enrolment.
