Learning Support LLDD Support

Individual Learning Support at Gateway College
Friendly and well equipped staff! Dyslexic, Dyspraxic, Maths Difficulties or Anything else? We can help!

1 to 1 Teacher Support Sessions.
Lap Top Computers to Borrow.
Dictaphones. Latest Software.
Dyslexia Assessments.
Assessments for Extra Time etc. in Exams.

How do we support students?
Students who require individual support will usually have a one-hour per week 1-1 lesson with an SDD teacher.
Some students will need occasional study support and we offer drop in study sessions in the learning resource centre each day, Monday - Thursday.
Students who need support within the classroom can be allocated an Educational Support Worker for some lessons to help them access their course.
Students are carefully assessed to see if they are entitled to special arrangements in examinations, for example, extra time, a reader and/or scribe. If this is the case then we provide trained specialist invigilators and separate examination rooms.
Students can borrow a wide range of equipment to use within the College including Lap-Top computers with the latest software including Voice Recognition, Word Prediction and Mind Mapping. We also loan students resources such as Dictaphones, coloured overlays etc. according to need.

Who should I contact if I need more information?
Please telephone Glynis Clarke (Dyslexia coordinator) on 0116 258 0731 or Jean Collington (Head of Skills Development Division) on 0116 2580721.

The Skills Development Division (SDD) at Gateway College provides a comprehensive range of services and resources for students who require individual support.

Who do we support?
We support students with specific learning difficulties including dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia (difficulty with maths). We also support hearing or visually impaired students and students with social/emotional difficulties, autistic spectrum conditions and general learning difficulties.
We screen all new students to the College for difficulties with literacy and numeracy using a comprehensive assessment and by analysing a piece of each student†s writing. If any student needs a more in depth assessment, then they are assessed in house by a specialist teacher who works full time at the college.
Students can refer themselves at any time during the year for assessment of their support needs. Students are also referred by their tutors and teachers.
