Whilst there are no formal entry requirements it would be useful to have used a computer before either at home or work. It might also be useful to have completed the Computer for the Novice course.

Description
ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) is a European qualification, which has been designed specifically for those who wish to demonstrate their competence in the use of information technology. From the start of version 4 the qualification is classed as BCS level 1 Certificate for IT users (ECDL Part 1) and BCS level 2 Certificate for IT users (ECDL Part 2).

There are eight modules, which include:

Concepts of information technology - ECDL Module 1
Using the computer and Managing Files - ECDL Module 2
Word Processing - ECDL Module 3
Spreadsheets - ECDL Module 4
Database - ECDL Module 5
Presentation - ECDL Module 6
Information & Communication - ECDL Module 7
Using IT - ECDL Module 8
Course Length
The course is run on a day or evening basis, for 3 hours per week for 36 weeks.
You can also complete it on a distance learning mode of attendance. *
You can complete tests only to obtain the qualification. *

Create a folder
Move and copy files
Formatting a disk
Backup disk

Word Processing
* Use the functions available in a standard word processing system
Mail merge
Tables and graphics
Use and set tabs

Spreadsheets
Create a spreadsheet and enter data numbers, text and formulae
Adjust column widths and format columns and rows
Sort the spreadsheet
Use the basic functions of a spreadsheet, such as Totalling and Averaging
Understand and use absolute and relative cell referencing in formulae
Produce different types of charts and graphs
Work with more than one spreadsheet

Databases
Design a simple database
Enter data into the database, edit, add and delete records
Search, select and sort data, based on criteria given
Present selected data in a particular sequence on screen and in reports

Presentation
Use graphic tools
Draw boxes, circles, text and lines
Retrieve pictures from a library and pull them into a drawing
Use colours, shadings and borders
Produce organisational charts

How will I learn?
Practical hands-on tasks with some formal input.

How will I be assessed?
ECDL can be obtained through success in a series of tests, which have been designed to examine personal computer skills. There is a test associated with each of the eight parts of the syllabus and tests may be taken in any order. Module 1 and the new module using IT will be assessed using a multiple-choice test which is externally marked by BCS.

Where could it lead?
Students are able to progress onto higher level computer courses e.g. Word Processing level 3, Advanced ECDL.
