Course programme

Two major seasons: Working Class Heroes + Black and Banned.
1. Working Class Heroes in British films: Films made famous by new stars in remarkable leading roles in the socially mobile sixties when young working-class talent exploded through music, fashion and film, making gritty, funny ‘kitchen-sink’ drama. The "new wave" was over by the mid-1960s, but the revolution it inspired continues today.

2. Black and Banned season: films you were not allowed to see because the FBI warned exhibitors they were subversive. These films were censored because they challenged the ethical and political values of their day. Depending on availability, students will be invited to introduced screenings and discussions of films such as The Spook Who Sat By the Door and Goodbye Uncle Tom. Includes a special presentation by the season’s curator.
