The course aims to give all staff, supervisors, managers and associated personnel the knowledge needed to be able to deliver a professional approach to Fire Safety and to implement the role of the Fire Warden.

There is no previous learning knowledge or experience required to take this course, although students will need to be within employment to enrol on and complete the course assignments, as these do relate to an organisations setting.

On successful completion of this course students will be awarded a Fire Warden Certificate of Achievement by NCFE, and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details of all the units you have completed as part of your course).

Unit 1 - Legislation

The following topics are covered: Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Role of Responsible and Relevant Person(s), Law enforcement and penalties, Fire safety signs and information.

Unit 2 - The Fire Warden

The following topics are covered: Role of Fire Warden, Safety and security, Liaison with the Fire and Rescue Service and external personnel (contractors), Role of the Fire and Rescue Service and Emergency Services, Training and CPD.

Unit 3 - Causes of Fire

The following topics are covered: Causes of fire, Sources of fuel, Arson and how to prevent it, Combustion, The fire triangle.

Unit 4 - How Fires Behave and Spread

The following topics are covered: Fire spread (conduction, convection, radiation and direct burn), Smoke spread, Hazards during a fire, Flashover and backdraft, Fire containment.

Unit 5 - Fire Detection

The following topics are covered: Detecting heat, Detecting smoke, Detection by personnel, Emergency lighting, Types of fire alarm system.

Unit 6 - Raising the Fire Alarm

The following topics are covered: Purpose of raising the fire alarm, Electrical means of raising the alarm, Manual means of raising the alarm& alarm sounders, How to contact the emergency services, Purpose and function of a break glass unit.

Unit 7 - Fire Evacuation

The following topics are covered: Actions to take in the event of a fire, Fire evacuation, Fire evacuation routes and assembly points& points of safety, Policies and procedures including smoking, Fire drills and training.

Unit 8 - Fire Fighting

The following topics are covered: Reasons for fire fighting, Role of the Fire and Rescue Service, Fire fighting equipment (buckets, blankets, hose reels, sprinklers, drenchers, flooding systems and dry risers), When not to tackle a fire, How to use a fire blanket.

Unit 9 - Fire Extinguishers

The following topics are covered: Classes of fire, Fire extinguisher classification, Actions of use, How to use a fire extinguisher, Storage and inspection.

Unit 10 - Fire Risk Assessment

The following topics are covered: What is a risk assessment and who is it completed by, What is a hazard, What is a risk, 5 steps to risk assessment, Recording and keeping of the risk assessment.

Unit 11 - Fire Equipment and Maintenance

The following topics are covered: Daily Checks, Weekly checks, Monthly checks, 6 -12 month checks, Record keeping.

Unit 12 - Fire Prevention

The following topics are covered: How to prevent fires, Suspicious behaviour, Changes in situations and impact, Good house keeping, Sources of advice on Fire Prevention.

Assessment:

To successfully complete this programme, students will be required to complete a number of assessments at the end of each module. These are marked by your tutor who will give you written feedback to your assessments and who will also give you support..

Course Assignments can be returned by uploading to the online portal, by email or by post. We recommend that assignments are completed and returned as word-processed documents through the online portal. Handwritten documents can be accepted but need to be clear and legible and may be subject to a longer marking time.
