Course description
This Level 1 course combines practical animal related experience on the Common Leys Animal Unit along with theory to cover the key areas of the care of animals. The course is suitable for students who are looking for entry into employment in the land based sector or progression on to a Level 2 course (possibly the BTEC First Diploma in Animal Care).
Course modules include:
Developing safe working skills on the Animal Unit
• Assist with looking after animals
• Assist with cleaning and looking after animal accommodation
• Assist with feeding and watering animals
• Assist with the handling and restraint of animals
• Developing personal, social and study skills
Literacy and numeracy skills will be integrated into the programme.
Assessment is via assignment, multiple choice computer based exams (GOLA), a portfolio of evidence, and practical tasks.

Final award
If successful, you will achieve a Level 1 Diploma in Land-based Studies (Animal Care)

Entry requirements
You are expected to have studied and achieved English, Maths and Science at GCSE level or equivalent, along with having enthusiasm, motivation and a commitment to animals. If you apply for this course you will be invited to attend an interview and an assessment day. Eligibility for the course will depend on your GCSE results, initial assessments in numeracy and literacy and the ability to be successful on the course.

This course will be delivered at Common Leys Farm.
