About this course

This course builds on what you have studied at GCSE and therefore a grade C or above at GCSE is advisable, but not essential. The course also involves some mathematics and in particular statistics, so again a grade C or above at GCSE mathematics would be useful.

Geography AS/A2

Entry Requirements
This course builds on what you have studied at GCSE and therefore a grade C or above at GCSE is advisable, but not essential. The course also involves some mathematics and in particular statistics, so again a grade C or above at GCSE mathematics would be useful.

Course content
The course aims to develop an understanding of how the environment and people interact, and to develop the practical skills necessary for fieldwork. There will be a number of local field trips.
AS: Year 1
The AS course consists of 2 units:
Changing Physical Environments
- Climate change
- Tectonics and hydrosphere
Changing Human Environments
- Population change
- Settlement change
A2: Year 2
A2 The A2 course consists of 2 units:
Geography Research
Sustainability - Food, water, energy, cities.

How Will I Be Assessed?
AS: There is an examination for each unit in the Summer.
A2: Essay exam paper and a decision making exercise.

What Could I Do Next?
You can continue to study geography at University. Geography will provide links to other subjects related to the environment, global development, archaeology, geology and anthropology. You could gain employment where graduate entry is required in such sectors as civil service, finance and teaching.

Are There Any Special Expenses?
Students will be expected to attend one day field trips at minimum expense.
