Course Description
The diplomas are designed to prepare people to enter the construction industry in their chosen craft. They have been designed to be progressive, building on skills and knowledge from level to level. The core includes health and safety, building methods and construction technology. The new diplomas cover a wider breadth of skill, knowledge and understanding, covering planning, estimating and new methods of construction.

Course Content
You will study theory and practiocal sessions in:

• Carry Out Safe Working Practices - learning basic site safety
• Information, Quantities and Communicating with others
• Safe Use of Woodworking Hand Tools - you will be shown how to recognise and use various hand tools in a correct and safe manner
• Timber Jointing Techniques - be able to mark out and safely make a variety of simple joints (e.g. a mortice and tennon joint)
• Use of Portable Power Tools - an introduction to the safe use of portable power tools associated with joinery
• Storing Materials and Equipment - includes information on manual handling and the recommended ways of storing and stacking construction materials

Additional Qualifications Key skills - Application of Number and Communication (unless exempt) Enrichment Environmental Sustainability Level 1 and 2

Course Length and Study Pattern
You will be expected to attend college for 2.5 days a week for 1 year.

Apprenticeship in your chosen trade at NVQ Level 2

Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery

Employment in the construction industry

Work Experience
The potential to offer work placements with local firms.

Assessment
You will be assessed throughout your course on your knowledge and your practical ability. Your tutor will assess your practical skills in the workshop through a series of practical assignments. Your knowledge is assessed in theory sessions and online multi-choice test. Throughout your course you will also produce a portfolio of your completed work.
