About this course

You may enter at Level 3 if you have at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above (including English) or B grade at Level 2 Child Care, plus satisfactory tutor and placement reports. Students progressing from Level 2 to 3 should have achieved Functional Skills English Level 1. Entry to the course is subject to interview.

Is this course for you
This 2 year course will enable you to develop a full career in the world of child care. It leads to a well respected qualification that will enable you to work as one of a team and to begin to take on some leadership responsibilities in child care and education settings.

What will you study
This course contains up to 12 units which cover a range of topics such as Child Development * Keeping Children Safe * Play and Learning * Principles of Child Care Practice * Promoting a Healthy Environment. Work experience is a compulsory part of this course and you will attend a professional child care setting two days per week alongside your college based timetable throughout the two year course.

How will you be assessed
Assessment is by a combination of written assignments, two examination-type tests and a piece of personal research. You will also produce an evidence portfolio of your work on placement and receive reports from your placement supervisor.

What can you do after course
This course provides up to 360 UCAS points to enable you to enter University and gain a degree in Child Care Practice or another field. Alternatively, you could enter the workplace where there are work based opportunities for further training and qualification, such as a Foundation Degree.

Additional information
Key Skills/Functional Skills - you will be expected to undertake these at the appropriate level. Due to the work experience element of this course you will be required to undergo the Criminal Records Bureau enhanced disclosure check to ensure your suitability to work with children.
