First Diploma in Health and Social Care

Is this course right for me?

Health and Social Care is about helping people with their lives. It teaches you how to provide total support for people of all ages.

What will I be learning?

This course consists of six units. You will cover the following core units, communication and individual rights, plus individual needs with the health and social care sectors. Specialist units consist of vocational experience, cultural diversity, anatomy and physiology, human lifespan development, creative and therapeutic approaches, health and social care services and the impact of diet upon health.

You will also be expected to complete a minimum of 60 hours of work experience which could be in a setting such as a nursing home, hospital, or perhaps a day centre for people with disabilities.

How will I learn?

You will learn through a variety of approaches including practical and theory sessions. You will work individually and in groups and will have the opportunity to practice clinical skills in the classroom and work placement.

The main aims are to introduce key theories, information, concepts, and ideas, explaining difficult points and providing a starting point for additional individual study. Ideas from previous study will be tied together and examples provided to help you learn challenging topics. New and up-to-date information that may not be in the textbook will also be provided through health professional expertise. Community service projects allow you to apply the lessons learned in the classroom to real-life situations and experiences.

What else might I want to know?

As you will be working with vulnerable individuals, acceptance on to this course will require you to apply for an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure at cost of ??38. There is also a college uniform requirement for which there is a small charge of approximately ??15. There may also be the opportunity to take part in educational trips and visits as a part of this programme of study for which there may be additional costs.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion, at merit level, you will be able to apply to progress onto a level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care at South Devon College and then perhaps onto one of our in house foundation degrees in the future. Alternatively your qualification could allow you to work in a supervised capacity in the Health and Social Care sector.
