What will I be learning?

A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A* - C and is taken as a full time course. It introduces you to the area of music performance and technology and provides a good basis for students to go on to do more advanced work or study related qualifications. The course is made up of six units; two core units that explore the music profession, and how to plan and create music products, and four specialist units.

The specialist units enable you to study different areas of music performance in more depth, such as; Development as a Musical Performer; Working as a Musical Ensemble and Musical Composition. You will study key skills Communication Level 1.

How will I learn?

In each unit you will be given assignments that are designed to achieve clear outcomes, such as how to create and market a musical product or performance, or how to develop as a musical performer. These assignments will then be graded at pass, merit or distinction level.

Work is applied to specific work related situations or activities, providing relevant scenarios for developing ideas, often with opportunities for teamwork and in-depth study. Later in the course you will have a final major project to complete which will reinforce your knowledge and understanding across the programme.

What else might I want to know?

You will be required to supply your own musical instrument. (Guitar, bass, etc. drum kits are part of the backing equipment supplied in the rehearsal rooms). You will also be required to participate in an audition. There will be a Fifty Pounds materials fee which will be paid at enrolment. You can apply for funding to help with this as appropriate.

What can I do afterwards?

A BTEC First Diploma prepares you for employment in the music performance & creative indstries, and provides a good grounding to progress to a more advanced course such as BTEC National Awards, Certificates and Diplomas.
