Introductory Diploma in Travel

What will I be learning?

You will have the opportunity and support to develop the skills needed to be effective in the workplace. This will include developing your own personal effectiveness and responsibilities. You will learn how to provide excellent customer service and produce displays in travel and tourism. There are lots of practical tasks involved in the course as well as completing written assignments. You will experience a broad introduction to the industry and the exciting and vibrant world of hospitality, travel and tourism. Time will also be spent researching job vacancies in the industry, as well as preparation for applications and interview, and an introduction into what life will be like when you do start out in the workplace.

How will I learn?

You will have a range of lecturers and will learn through a variety of activities and practical workshops. You will be expected to participate in group activities as well as working on an individual basis. Assignments will be marked internally. You will be assessed using a range of methods, such as written assignments, role-plays, group or individual presentations. Assessments will sometimes be based on trips/visits. All learners will be expected to undertake a two-week work experience placement and they will have assignments based on this. Students will develop hospitality skills through working in our training restaurant, Horizons.

What else might I want to know?

Travel and tourism is a rapidly growing exciting and diverse industry and is constantly evolving. This course will help you develop the skills and knowledge to open up a whole range of opportunities, and achieve qualifications that you will be able to develop and progress on to other travel and tourism further education programmes. We actively encourage students to participate in many enrichment extra-curriculum activities and put into practice some of the skills and knowledge they have learnt, as well as developing their own personal skills. In the past, students have put up displays at the college promoting overseas destinations, organised fund-raising events for Comic Relief, the Red Cross and Sport Relief.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion of the Introductory Diploma, with a good overall grade, you may be able to progress on to the First Diploma programme, furthering and developing your knowledge and skills. Alternatively you may choose to develop further skills in hospitality.
