Is it right for me?
This Level 3 qualification (equivalent to two A levels) is suitable for school leavers or mature students. The course is equivalent to, and run in conjunction with, the National Diploma in Agriculture Year 1. The course provides a thorough grounding in the agricultural industry and the qualification is highly respected within the farming community. It enables students to understand technical aspects and to carry out a range of practical jobs on the farm. Varied subjects including ploughing, crop production, beef, sheep and dairy production, milking, estate skills, workshop practice, machinery and work related experience. Successful completion of the course leads to payment at Grade 4 on the Agricultural Wages Board Scales.

What qualifications will I need?
School leavers will need four GSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English, or First Diploma at Distinction level or NVQ level 2 with good levels of maths and English. Mature students lacking formal qualifications will also be considered. Enthusiasm, relevant practical experience and the ability to cope with written work is required.

Additional qualifications gained include NPTC Certificates in Competence in Tractor Driving and Loader Work. Key Skills in communications, application of number and information technology will also be developed.

What is involved?
Study at Kingston Maurward College. Lectures, demonstrations, practical instruction, industrial visits and farm practicals. A period of work experience will be required by each student. Depending on entry qualifications, this can be completed on and off the farm.

Where will it take me?
Responsible farming job such as foreman, head tractor driver or assistant herd manager. Entry to second year of National Diploma in Agriculture.

What materials are required?
Practical clothing, overalls, waterproofs, steel toe'capped safety boots, basic stationery. Tetanus protection is recommended.

What is next?
2nd year of National Diploma in Agriculture, Work Based Learning Apprenticeship or Advanced Apprenticeship in Farming

How will I be assessed?
A range of continuous assessments including written assignments, practical tests, externally set assessments.
