About this course
You will have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above (preferably Maths and English), or BTEC First Diploma Sport (adventure sport). Motivated mature students and over 18s on the basis of references.

What will I be learning?
As part of the course you will study leadership skills, land based skills, waterbased skills, training & fitness, health & safety, nutrition, coaching and anatomy & physiology. During your course you will have the opportunity to gain additional qualifications including:
Kayaking - BCU (British Canoe Union) 1-5 Star awards, Whitewater Safety & Rescue, Coaching awards levels 1-3, White Water Safety and Rescue; Single Pitch Award,climbing wall award
MTLB Walking Group Leaders; Powerboating - RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Powerboat level 1-2, RYA Safety Boat Certificate
First Aid, Sports Leaders UK level 1 Award in Community Sports Leadership, National Pool Lifeguard Qualification as well as the opportunity to join other outdoor pursuits such as yachting, orienteering, sailing and shorebased courses, sea and surf kayaking.
As part of the course there will also be opportunities to go on various overseas expeditions, trips and residentials.
How will I learn?
You will be undertaking a course that consists of 18 units over 2 years. If you complete your 18 units this is the equivalent to 3 'A' Levels (you have the possibility of attaining 360 UCAS points). You are graded at Pass, Merit & Distinction level for each unit. You are assessed through a series of assignments which produce a portfolio of coursework. Assessment methods may include the following; writing reports, presentations, practicals, video analysis and witness observation/statements.
What else might I want to know?
South Devon College's Adventure Sport department will operate from the new state of the art centre at Noss on the River Dart. Our Marine Academy offers an excellent range of courses and we have access to fantastic equipment and facilities including a yacht, dinghys, kayaks and powerboats.
What can I do afterwards?
This qualification will prepare you for entry to Higher Education, where you can undertake a BSc in adventure sport or continue your studies at the college following a foundation degree in adventure sport or yachting. Depending on your progression throughout the course you may well enter a adventure sport establishment as a professional instructor.
