About this course

You will need five GCSEs grades C or above including English or a First Diploma with a distinction grade. Applications from mature students will be considered, acceptance subject to interview.

National Diploma in Travel and Tourism

What will I be learning?

Throughout the programme you will be developing a broad and relevant understanding of the industry. Subjects include: Investigating Travel & Tourism, The Business of Travel, UK Destinations, Customer Service, and European Travel Market. There will also be units on specialist subjects such as the Cruise Sector, Handling Air Passengers, Hospitality, Events, Conferences and Exhibitions, Marketing, Long-Haul Destinations, and Special Interest Tourism. You will also have the opportunity to select from industry focused additional qualifications, enhancing your employment prospects, such as Air Cabin Crew, Resort Representative and Airport Passenger Services Agent.

How will I learn?

You will have a range of lecturers and will learn through a variety of activities. These may include lectures and practical workshops. You will be expected to participate in group activities as well as working on an individual basis. Assignments will be marked internally. You will be assessed using a variety of methods, such as written assignments, role-plays, group or individual presentations. Assessments will sometimes be based on trips/visits.

What else might I want to know?

Travel and tourism is a rapidly growing exciting and diverse industry and is constantly evolving. This course will help you develop skills and knowledge to open up a whole range of opportunities. We actively encourage students to participate in enrichment extra-curriculum activities and put into practice some of the skills and knowledge they have learnt, as well as developing their own personal skills. In the past, these have included hosting a Tourism Careers and Tourism Conference, meeting and greeting V.I.P.s and local dignitaries visiting the college, spending a day at the BMI cabin crew training centre, working with local tourist attractions and looking at their marketing strategies. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of trips such as Butlins, Plymouth Marine Aquarium and local tourist activities, as well as an overseas residential to Disneyland Paris. Students will be required to purchase a uniform and a portfolio.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion of the National Diploma, you could to progress to Higher Education programmes, such as a Foundation Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management at South Devon College or a range of other university courses. Alternatively, you will be well placed to gain employment in the travel and tourism sector.
