Why should I study NVQ Food Preparation and Cooking (Level 1)?
Studying Catering and Hospitality will increase your practical skills and enable you to acquire more knowledge about basic preparation and cookery methods and the Catering Industry as a whole. This practical programme provides an excellent foundation for a career in the catering industry. Working in Chapters Restaurant the College's training restaurant you will gain valuable hands-on experience.

What will be studied on the course?
Course Modules NVQ Level 1 include:

  • Maintain a safe hygienic and secure working environment
  • Maintain food safety when storing, handling and serving food
  • Contribute to effective team work
  • Plus 4 other optional units


When does the course start and how long does it last?
The course starts in September and lasts for 1 academic year.

What qualifications are needed to do the course?
An interest in the Catering & Hospitality Industry and GCSE grades E and F are required. A good standard of secondary education and satisfactory school report/Record of Achievement are required.

How will the learner be assessed?
To gain the full qualification you must complete all seven units. You will be assessed by observation, questioning and products of work. The assessment takes place over a period of time and is based on the individual's competence. You will build up a portfolio of work to support your learning. One mandatory unit is tested on-line.

How much will the course cost?
You will have access to a fully equipped training kitchen. Students will have to provide their own uniform and knives costing approx. £140. You may have to contribute to the cost of any visits arranged throughout your course.
