NVQ Level 1 in Hairdressing
and GCSEs - English at Grade D, GCSE Maths at A-D and also the following:
Minimum Initial Assessment Literacy L1, Numeracy entry 3.
Good Communication Skills;
Commitment to the course;
Completion of work experience in a salon with a positive reference;
Have good manual dexterity skills (i.e. an ability to work with their hands);
A satisfactory reference which will include information on behaviour, attendance and punctuality; and
Completed basic skills qualification at Level 1.
Starter kit if full kit is not available at the start of course.
PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
This course is aimed at those students who wish to pursue a career in Hairdressing or progress onto FE Level 3 qualifications in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy at the College or other institutions. The course involves both practical and theory classes. During the practical lessons, students will be working in a realistic salon environment and will be expected to carry out hairdressing services on clients.
As clients for all courses cannot be guaranteed, students may need to provide their own clients.
There will be a minimum of one subject related external visit during the year which is part of the course and therefore compulsory. It is also a requirement of the course that students undertake one and a half hours per week enrichment activity which will be agreed with group tutors. There will also be opportunities to enter hairdressing and beauty competitions and it is expected that all students will take part in these activities.
PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
On successful completion of this course students can progress onto NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing after gaining industrial experience or find employment in the Hairdressing industry
as a senior stylist for a minimum of 18 months. (A trade test to assess ability will be required prior to progression on to Level 3 Hairdressing). There are many opportunities where a successful students might seek employment on ocean liners,TV, theatre, fashion work or photography.
ASSESSMENT STRUCTURE This qualification is gained through observed practical, oral and written assessment that will be on going throughout the duration of the course. Students will be expected to collect relevant evidence through witness testimony projects and assignments towards their portfolio. Where appropriate students may be able to provide evidence of prior learning and experience which can be accredited. The portfolio of evidence will be submitted for internal and external verification. Portfolios may be required to be available for inspection up to three years after completion of the programme. This is a requirement of City and Guilds.
EXCURSIONS / WORK EXPERIENCE Students are advised that they may benefit from continuous work placement in a commercial salon whilst studying on a Level 2 programme.
