Plumbing Level 1 (for school leavers)

Course Details

This course is for learners who have just left school and do not have employment in the plumbing industry, but who have a desire to become plumbing apprentices. Many previous learners on this course have applied for and attended interviews with plumbing companies securing an apprenticeship because of their work and effort whilst on the course. Attendance: 18 hours per week, usually 6 hours per day, 3 days per week You will need to provide protective work clothes, footwear and basic study materials, all other equipment and materials are supplied by the College. Textbooks are available in the College library and there may be time outside the 18 hours course time when you need to use the College's library facility so that assignments can be completed on time. The aim of the course is for you to develop the appropriate plumbing and construction industry skills so that you have an improved chance of obtaining a plumbing, gas or heating fitter apprenticeship. Grants may be available for this course, please check with you local education authority and/or the College's Learner Support Services office. The course has two main parts: 1. Key-skills portfolio building in Number (Maths) and Communication (English), or ICT. 2. Basic theory and practical skill in domestic plumbing, on systems of cold, hot and heating water. Sanitation, drainage, key principles and common plumbing processes. In practical lessons you will be measuring, bending and jointing different pipe materials accurately; installing simple pipe work; carry out routine maintenance of plumbing systems. Also safe practice of all practical work in the workshop and building site. Assessment The three main parts of the course will be assessed by practical assignments and theory test papers. An ASET certificate will be awarded to learners who have proven the necessary practical skills and knowledge of basic plumbing systems. Note for 2009/2010: The qualification may change to City and Guilds Level 1 Introductory Certificate in Basic Construction Skills (6217-01).

Qualifications required:
1. Must be over 16 years of age and below 19 years of age on the September enrolment date.2. Pass the College's entry test (contact the College's Admissions service to arrange the test before March of the year you want to start in the September). 3. Learners will attend an interview with the course tutor, where you will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the course and its requirements. The course conditions will be explained in detail. You need to be ready to accept these conditions that relate to safety and behaviour.4. Provide a copy of your report or reference showing your attendance and punctuality. This will be required at your interview.
An initial assessment may be carried out prior to an offer of a place.
Please note that this is a popular course with limited places, selection for the course takes place from May each year and applicants with the best qualifications and the highest entry test scores are offered places. Selection for interview is determined by the College test score and the availability of places.

Course length:
This is a one year course, starting in September and finishing in July of the following year. This is 35 weeks of attendance, with normal bank holiday breaks, two weeks at Christmas and Easter, with half-term holidays. You will be given a College diary on enrolment that includes all College holidays. However, please check with course tutors before booking holidays outside the normal attendance weeks.

Safety footwear must be worn in all workshops. We do not allow the use of safety trainers.

Progression:
Employed status and attending College in subsequent years as an Apprentice, provided the learner is successful in completing and passing assessment criteria, finding an employer and can meet the course conditions for the Apprenticeship.
