Course content:
This is a new course for adults who wish to go to university to study a degree in a humanities-based subject, social science or teaching, but who are not yet working at the standard required for entry to the Access programme. It is designed to help you develop the study skills, knowledge and confidence that are essential for students who plan to progress to a Level 3 Access course and beyond.
Students work on personal development strategies such as time management during Tutorials. You will consider how learning actually takes place and explore your own learning style. During Study Skills the skills you will develop include: how to locate, retrieve and store information efficiently; using various reading techniques; writing summaries; producing bibliographies and referencing work; using basic word processing to edit, organise and integrate information and using a variety of sources to research a topic. During English classes you will work on developing your speaking and listening skills by taking part in discussions, interviews and giving short presentations. You will also develop the technical accuracy of your spelling, punctuation and grammar and extend your vocabulary. You will study a variety of texts and produce a range of written assignments showing how you can adapt your style and format for different purposes. You will demonstrate that you can plan, draft, edit, review and redraft your writing. In Maths classes you will develop your number work to include the following skills: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals; understanding and using fractions; calculating percentages; using ratios and proportions accurately etc. In Society Studies you will focus on four topics which are particularly relevant to the Access programme you plan to progress to: Understanding Equal Opportunities Understanding Aspects of Citizenship Understanding the Cognitive Development of children Understanding Young People, Law and Order.

The course is for 36 weeks, three days a week

Course resources:
All students have access to our fully equipped state of the art learning centre. This included free internet access. Students for whom English is an additional language may also attend an ESOL workshop.

Assessment:
Assessment will be through a mixture of practical, oral and written work both home work and class work - including project work and tests. Students present a portfolio of work which is externally verified by the Open College Network London Region)

Next step:
Access to Humanities, Social Care, Primary Teaching or similar.

Fees Info
The fee where stated is an 'INCLUSIVE FEE' for UK/EU students. This fee includes the tuition fee, examination fee and exam board registration fee. You may have to pay extra for materials for the course. If you are under 19 years or you are in receipt of an income related benefit the course and exam fee is FREE. Students aged 60+ years pay 70% of this fee. Students aged 19+ will also have to pay a College Registration Fee of £30 (or £20 if you receive benefit) once per academic year.Materials costs:
The tutor will advise you about any materials costs.
