Safeguarding Children and Young People

This six week course is designed for practitioners working in an early years or educational setting. This course may also be of interest to people looking to return to education or those that wish to develop further insight into the Every Child Matters agenda.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be entitled to twenty credits from the University of Hull that they can use towards a related higher education qualification if they wish to.

Course content

Safeguarding children and young people in line with current legislation and practice is integral to the role of any worker within the early years or education sector. This course will examine professional responsibilities, values and ethical issues and will focus on particular codes of practice and legal requirements so that learners can consider their role in promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.

By completing this programme you will gain:

  • the knowledge and skills required to undertake the complex task of evaluating situations where there is a risk of abuse, failure to protect and harm to self and others.
  • an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the worker in relation to the protection of children and young people from abuse and neglect.
  • an increased awareness of, and an enhanced ability to work within, the limits of the your own authority and an understanding of how organisation policy and procedures are critical to these functions.

The course is delivered one evening a week for six weeks with delegates required to produce a critical evaluation of the legislation and government guidelines affecting the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people, taking into account professional practice.

Students will receive a certificate of achievement from the Centre for Professional Studies at University Centre Doncaster and, if they wish to, twenty credits from the University of Hull which could be used towards a related higher education qualification in the future.

Entry Requirements

This course is open to all interested parties with no formal academic qualifications required. As a result of the nature of this course students will need access to a suitable working environment.
