German for Beginners

What is the German for Beginners course?
This course is suitable for those who have some basic knowledge of the language and is designed to give the beginner confidence in speaking German. It will cover the vocabulary and structures that are needed for the purpose of practical communication for holidays or for entertaining speakers of the German language in this country.

Teaching and Learning
The course will encourage you to speak the language from the very beginning. You will work in pairs or small groups to practise expressions and sentence patterns and develop practical comprehension skills through reading, listening to recordings, watching DVDs and using the Internet and language laboratory.

You will learn vocabulary and structures that are needed for practical communication while visiting the country or entertaining speakers of the German language.

You will meet material in the form of everyday dialogues, interviews of native speakers and short written texts such as advertisements and tourist leaflets which provide a wealth of words and expressions. As they arise in context, the grammatical structures necessary for effective communication will be explained and practised.

You will be expected to put aside at least one hour a week between lessons for private study.

Assessment details
There are no formal assessments. You will receive a College certificate on completion of the course.
