The course is an introduction to the classic literature of Russia in its golden age, the late nineteenth century, and the ideas, dreams and conflicts which shaped it. We’ll be reading and talking about work by four of the very greatest writers of that period.

• Recognise recurring themes in Russian literature• Relate these to the wider world of Russian culture• Feel confident enough to explore further study of related fiction on your own.

Many of the texts are available online, but it may be necessary to buy or borrow some texts. All can be bought cheaply, often secondhand, from bookselling websites .If you are buying or borrowing, it would help if you used these editions:• Dostoevsky Notes from Underground (with The Double) Penguin, translated Wilks• Turgenev Fathers and Sons Penguin Classics (2009)• Tolstoy The Death of Ivan Ilyich and other stories Vintage, tr Pevear and Volokhovsky• Chekhov Lady with Lapdog Penguin Classics, translated MagarshackApart from the reading material, you...

The course is an interactive mixture of tutor exposition and class discussion. Videos and clips will also be shown and discussed. You will asked to read the texts before the class.

We’ll be reading a range of shorter Russian fiction from Dostoevsky’s tortured account of obsession and revenge Notes from Underground, to Tolstoy’s unflinching look at mortality The Death of Ivan Ilyich, and Turgenev’s brilliant and humane portrait of a Russia suffering in a crisis of identity, Fathers and Sons; and work by a writer considered by many to be perhaps the greatest short story writer ever, Anton Chekhov. His tales are enigmatic, ironic and sympathetic snapshots of individual lives: among them, a study of adultery and unexpected love Lady with Lapdog.
