About the course:
This is a practical course, which is underpinned by a theoretical background. The emphasis of this course is 'learning by doing' and not on competence. Students will cover a number of assignments and practical assessments to cover the underpinning knowledge. The necessary skills for this qulification will be learnt though a variety of situations, in a commerical salon, input sessions and through theory lessons.

Course Content:

The course covers the following units:
Working in hairdressing, maintaining health & safety in the salon, client consultation for hairdressing services, shampoo & condition the hair & scalp, cut women's hair, style & dress womens hair,colour hair, perm & nuetralise hair and promote products and services to clients in a salon.

Learning Style:
The necessary skills for this qualification will be learnt through a variety of situations, in a commercial salon, practical input lessons and during theory lessons.

Equipment Requirements:
A full hairdressing kit costing approx £180.00 which you will need prior to starting the course (list available from hairdressing department)

Also a text book - NVQ level 2 Hairdressing with Barbering by Leah Palmer & Nicci Moorman Heinemann ISBN 0-435-45155-3.

You will be required to wear a uniform during all practical classes. This consists of a black tunic (cost approx. £19.00 forms available from hair department), black trousers and black shoes or plain black trainers. You will be expected to find models for your practical assessments, who will be expected to contribute to the cost of consumables.

Assessment:
Practical assessments can be carried out on either models or blocks, but if a block is used to demonstrate a practical skill, a model will need to be used for the consultation element.

The theory side of the qualifications can be produced either by assignments or tasks. and by sitting a generic online test.

Students can achieve a pass, credit or distinction for their course work.

Additional Information:
Under 19 full time students will have the fees for this course paid for by the government.

An interview with the hairdressing team will be required for a student to apply for a place on this course.
