HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE BTEC FIRST CERTIFICATE
BTEC first Health & Social Care is a one year course, the course is aimed at students who have not yet got the qualifications for Advanced level study. Successful completion of the course allows students to choose an advanced level course of study if they wish. Students successfully completing the course do not have to continue studying Health & Social Care into Advanced level, although many people choose to.
The course develops knowledge and understanding of skills and issues involved in care, health and early years work, so is most suited to people who are interested in a career in this area.
Are there any special requirements?
Unit 1: Communication and individual rights
Here you will be looking at various forms of communication both verbal and non verbal, and studying the barriers to effective communication and how to overcome them.
You will also study the diversity of modern British society and laws promoting equality.
Unit 2: Individual needs in the health and social care setting
Here you will be looking at the many factors that influence the individual needs of people who need health and social care expertise. You will also study laws that promote effective health and safety.
Unit 3: Work experience
You will undertake 60 hours of relevant work experience where you will put unto practice the skills developed during the course. You will be asked to record and evaluate your experiences at work.
What skills will I need and be developing during the course?

You will need to organise yourself carefully if you are going to do
well in Health and Social Care.

There will be situations where good interpersonal and communication
skills will be needed. Communication will also be important in your
written work when you are writing up assignments and answering exam
questions. You will need to be able to express your own ideas, and
things you have found out through independent research, clearly and in
your own words. If this isn't your strong point but you want to
improve, support is available to help you.

Skills you use during this course are also needed for your Key Skills
qualification.

What career opportunities are there?

Most students who take this course are interested in working in jobs
that involved helping people, (e.g. nursing, social work, police) some
students take Health & Social Care so they can learn a variety of
interpersonal skills that can be useful in lots of different
occupations.

Most students continue to Advanced level courses but some take up
employment or work-based training instead, often in related areas.

There is a work experience week in the spring term of the course,
which lets students try out a job in the health, care or early years
sector.

The course is taught by an experienced and knowledgeable team, who are
keen to help you achieve your potential. If you feel you need it,
English support lessons are available to help you with coursework.

Visits to care settings take place as part of the course, to help you
see the practical applications of what you are studying.
