A CAREER IN HOSPITALITY

Hospitality is a fast growing, competitive industry. To stay ahead, businesses must offer better value for money and higher standards of food and customer service. As a result, more and more employers are demanding high-quality staff. Because of better training, career progression has become faster so there is no better time to get involved.

If you show commitment and the right attitude to work, you'll be able to progress quickly and make yourself a real asset to your employer. If you are about to, or have recently left school, there are two main options open to you.

1. Join one of HTP’s Apprenticeship programmes

These programmes combine ‘on the job’ training with your employer and ‘off-the-job training’ at one of HTP’s training centres. You will work towards your National Vocational Qualification in your occupational area at the appropriate level. The duration of the Apprenticeship will depend on the programme but will generally be between 9 and 15 months and then you will continue straight on to your Advanced Apprenticeship which should be completed between 12 and 18 months

2. Join one of HTP’s Pre-Apprenticeship programmes. You will have the opportunity tocomplete a Level 1 NVQ and gain valuable work experience with a local employer.

These programmes are also an ideal way to brush up on your maths and English skills to help you progress into employment.

What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is where you earn while you learn. Based with a local employer you will work towards completing a number of qualifications that make up the National Framework. You can join the Apprenticeship programme either as an employed person or if you don’t have a job currently we will help you find a suitable position.

How much do I get paid?

The amount depends on your age and the programme you are on. As of 1st April 2008 the following rates of pay apply:

Apprenticeship

Age 16 – 17 : At least £80 per week plus travel
Age 18 + : At least £80 per week plus travel for the first year. At least National Minimum Wage thereafter.
