Improving Your Landscape Photography

Level: This is an intermediate course.

What is the Improving your landscape photography course?
This scheme is designed for the amateur digital photographer with either a compact or SLR digital camera. You will have some experience of using both the camera and Photoshop software. You should also have basic computer skills using Windows XP, keyboard layout knowledge and mouse control. Lessons will alternate between local locations for photography, and college for Photoshop CS4 tuition.

By the end of the course you should be able to:
  • Have a greater awareness of camera handling techniques, composition and viewpoint in order to control and make purposeful creative landscape photographs.
  • Use Photoshop CS4 to manipulate and improve your landscape images.
Course topics
This course provides a practical introduction to the skills and knowledge for the candidate wishing to improve their digital photography, whilst exploring more complex techniques and present-day applications, coupled with the creative potential of the medium.

  • Urban and rural landscapes
  • Capturing the atmosphere and essence of the location
  • Use of colour, pattern and shape
  • Developing a sense of depth and distance
  • Change of mood through weather conditions
  • Lighting
  • Equipment
  • Composition and framing
  • Shooting in RAW
  • Replacing skies in Photoshop
  • Black and White
  • Creating panoramic images
Teaching and Learning
The lesson style is relaxed and informal with an emphasis on student involvement. There will be practical demonstrations with accompanying handouts, as well as tutor assistance as required. The Photoshop part of the course will take place in the computer room, with the practical photography taking place on location.

Assessment details
Assessment is by observation with verbal feedback.

Notes

Extra costs : Own transport, digital camera, tripod (recommended, but some are available to borrow), writing materials and notebook, memory stick for saving digital files (this is essential).
